MURUJUGA RANGER VESSEL ON ORDER: BOOST FOR SEA COUNTRY MANAGEMENT
BY ASAD KHAN
Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) has commenced production on a custom-built 5.8-meter rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) to enhance its capacity to manage the islands of the Dampier Archipelago. Designed to carry six people, the vessel is expected to be delivered by mid-2025.
The project is backed by $204,232 in funding from the State Government through Lotterywest, covering the boat, trailer, and associated equipment.
Woodside Energy has also contributed $390,626, which will fund the vessel, advanced camera equipment, and two years of operating costs.
MAC Chairperson Peter Hicks expressed enthusiasm about the vessel’s role in fulfilling the long-standing vision of Elders to protect and manage sea country.
“This funding has enabled MAC to do what the Elders have always wanted us to do—care for our sea country and islands, as well as the Burrup Peninsula,” Mr. Hicks said.
“With the support of Lotterywest and Woodside Energy, we can now order a vessel that ensures we have the skills and tools in-house to get to the islands whenever needed.”
Since the retirement of MAC’s former vessel Topaz in 2022, the organization has relied on charters and partnerships for access to the islands. The new RHIB will significantly enhance operations, with Mr. Hicks noting its suitability for the task.
“The RHIB is ideal for inshore waters. It provides excellent access for beach landings and will meet our Rangers’ needs as they build their boating skills,” he said.
“Five of our Rangers have already completed coxswain training and are working towards certification.”
The vessel will also support advanced research and heritage management. In collaboration with Flinders University, six MAC Rangers are pursuing PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification to enable underwater archaeology.
“This vessel symbolizes the growth of the Pilbara Ranger Network and MAC’s commitment to protecting and understanding our cultural and natural heritage,” Mr. Hicks said.
He also highlighted the significance of today’s announcement of $4.12 million in funding over three years for the Pilbara Ranger Network through Lotterywest.
“A big thank you to the Environment Minister Reece Whitby, Lotterywest, and Woodside Energy Group for their generous contributions, which make this possible,”
MAC continues to strengthen its capacity to care for the Dampier Archipelago, demonstrating its commitment to preserving the region’s cultural and environmental legacy.
