THOUSANDS MARCH IN PROTEST OVER TREATY OF WAITANGI BILL IN AOTEAROA (NZ)
Hundreds of protesters are in the middle of a nine-day march from Cape Reinga to New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, in opposition to a new bill that would narrow the interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi. The treaty, signed in 1840 between Māori chiefs and the British Crown, is central to race relations in New Zealand. The controversial Treaty Principles Bill, introduced by the centre-right government, aims to limit Māori rights that have been expanded through decades of court rulings. Organizers hope the march will spark conversations on Māori issues and Indigenous rights.
Organisers expect tens of thousands of people to join the demonstration by the time the march reaches Wellington next Tuesday.
Ngaarda Media’s Tangiora Hinaki spoke to Te Ata Kura O Rongomaiwahine Huata-Harawira about the Hikoi (March) as today (Friday 15th, November 2024), the protestors will arrive in Hastings, New Zealand, where Te Ata Kura O Rongomaiwahine is from.
