INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF TRADITIONAL DANCERS
BY ASAD KHAN
A renowned Aboriginal performer and cultural leader, James T Webb, is continuing to inspire and shape the next generation of traditional dancers.
Known by his traditional name Gumbiardi, Webb is the leader of the Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group, which has become a significant force in promoting and preserving Aboriginal culture through dance.
Mr Webb, an accomplished didgeridoo player, has been performing for over 25 years and has dedicated much of his life to teaching and sharing his cultural heritage.
Over the years, he has trained more than 30 men in the art of traditional Aboriginal dance, passing on knowledge and skills to ensure the continuation of these important cultural practices.
Now performing alongside his sons and grandsons, Webb continues to choreograph all of the group's dances, blending regional traditions with his own personal stories and unique style.
He believes that the group's performances are becoming stronger, as they work to share their culture with a wider audience.
Reflecting on the changes he has witnessed over the years, he shared his thoughts on the evolving dynamics of his performances.
"When we first started, a lot of the Noongar kids were at the back," he said.
"The mainstream students were a bit hesitant, almost embarrassed. But now, the Noongar kids are sitting at the front, and the white kids want to be Noongars,
“There has been a lot of change, and it's all about how you present yourself. I work hard, practising a lot, and I believe in presenting our culture in a strong, positive way."
His dedication to preserving and sharing Aboriginal culture is not only about performance but also about fostering pride and understanding.
By passing on his knowledge to younger generations, he is ensuring that the cultural traditions of the past will continue to thrive in the future.
Through his leadership and dedication, Webb is leaving a lasting legacy, one that is inspiring a new wave of traditional dancers to embrace their heritage with pride and strength.
