GERALDTON CANDIDATE ADVOCATES FOR PUBLIC REGISTER OF REPEAT OFFENDERS

BY ASAD KHAN

Former Geraldton mayor and independent candidate Shane Van Stein has proposed a controversial "name and shame" system aimed at deterring repeat offenders.

Mr Van Stein is advocating for the creation of a public register that would list the names and addresses of individuals with a history of repeated criminal behaviour. He argues that such a measure would help balance the fear experienced by victims of crime.

In a recent interview with Ngaarda Media, he expressed his belief that the potential for vigilantism could serve as a deterrent.

“I think an expectation by these folk that vigilantism could occur is a good thing,”

“I think that the more people are terrified of being caught out doing terrible things to other people, the better. We’re tired of seeing innocent people being victims of those who continually harm others and destroy property. It’s about time they felt what it’s like.” he said.

Mr Van Stein’s proposal has sparked debate, with critics raising concerns about the ethical and legal implications of publicly shaming offenders. Supporters, however, argue that such measures could empower communities and reduce crime rates.

The call for a public register comes amid growing frustration in Geraldton over recurring criminal activity. Van Stein, who is campaigning as an independent candidate, has positioned himself as a strong advocate for community safety and victim rights.

As the debate continues, the proposal raises questions about the balance between public safety and individual privacy, as well as the potential consequences of encouraging vigilantism.
